The Salsa On-1 left turn is one of the most essential moves for every salsa dancer — stylish, smooth, and used in nearly every routine.
To perform it:
- Start with your basic step. Step forward with your left foot on count 1, replace your weight to your right foot on 2, and return to neutral on 3.
- Prepare your body. As you complete your forward rock, open your shoulders slightly to the left and keep your frame relaxed.
- Turn gracefully. On counts 5-6-7, pivot over your left shoulder, stepping left-right-left as you rotate. Keep your core tight and your steps small to stay balanced.
- Spot your turn. Focus your eyes on a single point and snap your head around at the end of the rotation — it keeps your turn clean and prevents dizziness.
💡 Tip: Practice slowly at first with the music, then increase speed as your balance improves. The left turn connects beautifully with cross-body leads and shines in both partner work and solo shines.
