Beginner Salsa – Inside Turn Combo – Week 6

If you’re looking for a smooth and elegant salsa combination that flows naturally with the music, this one’s for you. It’s a simple sequence that mixes inside turns, right turns, and a playful exchange of roles — perfect for improving your coordination, timing, and partner connection.

Let’s break it down step by step:

1. Start with the Basic Step

Begin with your regular basic step on 1. Leaders step forward on the left, followers back on the right. Keep your connection relaxed and prepare for the first turn.

2. Lead an Inside Turn

On 1-2-3, guide your partner into a smooth inside turn with your left hand. Maintain a gentle, circular motion and allow the follower to complete her turn by count 7.

3. Leader’s Right Turn

As the follower finishes her turn, lower your right hand, and on 1-2-3, the leader executes a right turn. Keep your steps tight and pivot cleanly so you’re facing your partner again by count 5.

4. Follower’s Right Turn

On 5-6-7, raise your right hand to guide your partner into a right turn. Keep your hand above her head and maintain a clear rhythm — this is where the combo starts to flow beautifully.

5. Return to Basic Step

Both partners go back to a basic on the next 1-2-3, 5-6-7. Use this moment to reset your frame and connection.

6. Inside Turn from Right-Hand Connection

This time, keep a right-to-right hand connection. On 1-2-3, lead your partner into another inside turn using that right hand. This gives the move a different visual dynamic and challenges your coordination.

7. Leader’s Right Turn + Follower’s Right Turn

At the end of the follower’s inside turn, raise your hand and do another leader’s right turn on 1-2-3. Then on 5-6-7, guide your partner into a right turn — same timing, same energy, but a fun mirrored motion.

8. Finish with Basic

Close the sequence with a clean basic step. Smile, breathe, and get ready to repeat or transition into your next pattern.

Tips for Leaders

  • Keep your turns tight and your shoulders centered.
  • Use your fingertips, not your arm strength, to lead turns.
  • Stay light on your feet and maintain your rhythm throughout.

Tips for Followers

  • Spot your turns — always look for your partner.
  • Keep your frame active but not stiff.
  • Finish each turn cleanly before preparing for the next lead.

This figure is perfect for intermediate dancers who want to polish their turns and learn how to alternate leader/follower rotations smoothly. Try practicing it slowly first, then bring it up to full salsa tempo — you’ll love how naturally it fits into the rhythm of the music.
